Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu is considered to be the most prominent historical figure in all Albanian history. Gjergj Kastrioti (1405?-1468) came from a noble Albanian family based in Krujë or a nearby village. His father, Gjon, ruled over north-central Albania and fought against the Ottoman invasion, but eventually had to submit to the Sultan.

Helena Thopia was an Albanian princess of the Thopia family who held the Krujë region as sovereign lady for two terms; 1388-1392 and 1394–1403.

The following morning the Kastrioti family's standard—a red flag emblazoned with a black, double-headed eagle that has since been adopted as Albania's national flag—fluttered in the breeze over the city's castle. Here Kastrioti-Skanderbeg reportedly made his historic pronouncement: "I have not brought you liberty, I found it here, among you."
