Sobieslaw I was the first recorded duke of Pomerelia (Pomorze Gdanskie) of the Sobieslawice dynasty. His descent has not been conclusively established. It has been speculated that he may have been a son of Swietopelk I, duke of Pomerania (about 1080-1148), and he has also been linked to the Polish Piast dynasty and the Pomeranian house of Greifen.

Sobieslaw is credited with the donation of St. Catherine's Church at Gdańsk and the foundation of the Cistercian abbey of Oliwa about 1180, which formerly has been attributed to his son Sambor I. Sobieslaw was married before 1150. He is the father of Sambor I of Pomerania and Mestwin I of Pomerania.
