Beautifully rooted in the topography and history of the Black Mountains, Raymond Williams’ history blends research and fiction. The characters who people the past of this area are alive in their era, but I wished for more insight into the ways they felt and interacted and was a little disappointed by the set pieces of discourse that outlined historical events.

6 feb 1990 · However, it is hard work. I know the Black Mountains well and have walked all over them, but the use of Welsh and historic names makes them largely unrecognisable. The mix of fiction and history is disorientating, as one never knows the bearing the stories have on fact, if any.
If you want an idea of the history of England and Wales from a Welsh perspective, this is the book for you. Raymond Williams brings the periods he describes vividly to life, and using the device of a search through the Black Mountains to link the chapters is inspired. Get the second book too; it is equally as absorbing.
