Reverting back to the original story, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was adapted into a one-hour radio play in 1939 by Orson Welles who played the roles of Dr Sheppard and Hercule Poirot. Almost 50 years later it was again adapted into a radio play for BBC Radio 4 where John Moffat played his debut role as Hercule Poirot, a role he would continue to play throughout his career.
The widow Ferrars dies from an overdose of Veronal. Not twenty-four hours later, Roger Ackroyd—the man she had planned to marry—is murdered. It is a baffling case involving blackmail and death that taxes Hercule Poirot’s “little grey cells” before he reaches one of the most startling conclusions of his career.
