Early life Born in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of Eugene Ford Seymour and Sophie Mildred (née Bower; July 13, 1886 – April 15, 1974).

On January 10, 1931, Brokaw married Frances Ford Seymour (1908–1950) in a small New York City wedding.
