29 lug 2009 · The former boys’ Royal Grammar School in The Tything changed its name to RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School, or RGSAO, in September 2007 when it merged with the neighbouring girls’ school.
The Royal Grammar School Worcester was founded around 1291, received its Elizabethan Charter in 1561 and was granted its ‘Royal’ title by Queen Victoria in 1869. The Alice Ottley School was founded in 1883 as Worcester High School for Girls.

The Alice Ottley School was founded by Canon William Butler of Wantage and Alice Ottley in 1883. Canon Butler had arrived in Worcester in 1881 and he noted that whilst the provision of education for boys was good (with the Royal Grammar School and the King's School ), there was nothing of the same calibre for girls.

Sheila’s childhood has been described as ‘turbulent’ and she fared poorly at the Alice Ottley School in Worcester, almost being turfed out on a few occasions. Named after the educational pioneer Alice Ottley (1840-1912), who was also the school’s first headmistress, the Alice Ottley operated under this name from 1883 until 2007 when it merged with the Worcester Royal Grammar School.
