William Longespée's birth date is uncertain. He was an illegitimate son of King Henry II of England by Ida de Toeni. Marriage and Children. In 1196 his half-brother Richard I gave him the hand of Ela, whose father had died that year, making her Countess of Salisbury in her own right: she was then still a child.
The Ela of Salisbury series features a real historical figure—the formidable Ela Longespée. The young Countess of Salisbury was chosen to marry King Henry II’s illegitimate son William. After her husband’s untimely death, Ela served as High Sheriff of Wiltshire and ultimately founder and abbess of Lacock Abbey.

Ela Longespée (1244-c. 19 July 1276) was the eldest daughter and co-heiress of Stephen Longespee, Justiciar of Ireland, Seneschal of Gascony. Her paternal grandmother was Ela, Countess of Salisbury, who had founded Lacock Abbey, and for whom she was named.
Ela Longspee was born 1244 to Stephen Longespée (1216-1260) and Emmeline de Ridelsford (?-?) and died circa 19 July 1276 of unspecified causes. She married Roger la Zouche (c1242-1285) 1266 JL .
