Spark and her son Samuel Robin Spark at times had a strained relationship. They had a falling out when Robin's Orthodox Judaism prompted him to petition for his late great-grandmother to be recognised as Jewish. (Spark's maternal grandparents, Adelaide Hyams and Tom Uezzell, had married in a church. Tom was Anglican.
16 nov 2014 · On a cold, crisp afternoon in October 1998 about twenty members of the Edinburgh Jewish community met in the Jewish section of Newington Cemetery to reconsecrate two gravestones – one for my paternal grandmother, Rachel Spark, and one for my great-great aunt, Sarah Joel. As we shall see Sarah had a very important contribution to make in my life.
Their son, Samuel Robin Spark, was born in 1938; however, the Sparks’ marriage was not a happy one and broke up in the early 1940s, with Muriel Spark returning to the United Kingdom in 1944. Spark then worked for MI6 for the latter part of the Second World War, only beginning to write seriously following the end of the conflict.

Despite being creatively inclined from an early age, he did not become an artist until later in life, enrolling in the Edinburgh College of Art in 1983 with the help and encouragement of his friend Udi Merioz.

3 nov 2023 · Samuel Robin Spark (9 July 1938 6 August 2016) was a Scottish artist. He was the son of Sidney Oswald Spark and writer Muriel Spark. Prolific in his work, he created more than 1,000 paintings, photographs, and short texts and articles about art, Jewish culture, and his own family.
