26 apr 2022 · According to the Cass Tech website the school is a city-wide, college-preparatory, examination-entry school of choice, with a 97 percent graduation rate, located in the heart of Detroit within walking distance of the city’s sports and entertainment venues, which currently serves over 2400 students in grades 9–12.
Cass Technical High School. Opened in 1907, the original Cass Technical High School, commonly referred to as Cass Tech, was located at 2501 Second Avenue in Detroit. Named in honor of Lewis Cass, the school was located on the top floor of the old Cass Union School, a three-story brick building built in 1861 on a farm donated by Lewis Cass.
Cass Tech graduated its first class in 1910, though it was only six or seven students. The next year, the council approved $225,000 (more than $5 million today, when adjusted for inflation) to build a new building on the site of Cass Union. The triangular-shaped building was named Cass Technical High School and formally opened Oct. 23, 1912.

The new Cass Tech was not without controversy, though. The cost of the project had grown from $98,000,000 to $127,000,000, as material prices increased and changes to the original design were made including adding a 6th floor. On its completion, Cass Tech was the third most expensive school building in the United States.
