When Muriel, or The Time of Return premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 1963, it was not only hailed as a triumph by Jean Cocteau (“a terrible masterwork”), Jean-Luc Godard, and Henri Langlois but also won the award for Best Actress (Delphine Seyrig).

A middle-aged widow, living with her stepson, reunites with an old flame, and both grow increasingly haunted by their own past. Meanwhile, the stepson, a former soldier, is troubled by the memory of a girl named Muriel who he met while deployed in the Algerian War.
Muriel marks a return for Resnais to themes from earlier films – the unreliability of memory and, as in Hiroshima mon amour, the juxtaposition of the horrors of war, in this case torture, with a romantic relationship.
