In 1899, Damad Mahmud Celaleddin, a brother-in-law of the Ottoman ruler, deserted the palace, along with his two sons. As soon as his absence was noticed, the sultan alerted everyone. When it turned out that the missing in-law had travelled to France, the sultan had Ottoman spies and diplomats follow him there.
