By 1655, Thomas may have left Stratford to live closer to his wealthy brother, Richard Quiney, who had prospered in London as a grocer. In his will, Richard charged his estate with an annuity of £12 payable to Thomas for life, together with a one-off payment of £5 to cover Thomas’s burial expenses.
Judith married Thomas Quiney in 1616, and the couple had three sons: Shakespeare Quiney, who died in infancy, and Richard and Thomas, who both died in 1639 within a month of each other. Neither of them married or had children before they died. It is possible to claim a relationship to Shakespeare through his sister, Joan.
Judith, William and Anne Shakespeare’s younger daughter, married Thomas Quiney on February 10, 1616, according to the Holy Trinity Church parish register. Next to the entry, an “X” added by a later hand highlights its significance. Judith was 31 and Thomas, the third son of Richard Quiney, was 27.
Richard Quiney was buried on May 31, 1602, as recorded in the Holy Trinity Church parish register. On October 2, 1601, he had been sworn in as bailiff for the following twelve months and was thus described as “Mr. Shakespeare Documented features all primary sources that document the life and career of William Shakespeare.
It’s a fascinating human document. The year was 1598 and Richard Quiney, whose son Thomas was later to marry Shakespeare’s younger daughter, was in London. He was there to petition the Privy Council for a new, more favourable charter for Stratford and for relief from the latest subsidy voted by Parliament.
