Il étudie à l’Université de Syracuse dans l’État de New York puis à la Cartoonists and Illustrators School de la même ville qui correspond à l’actuelle School of Visual Arts.

Sol LeWitt werd geboren in 1928 in Hartfort, Connecticut, als zoon van Russisch-Joodse immigranten. Zijn moeder stimuleerde hem al vroeg om tekenlessen te volgen. In de jaren 1940 studeerde hij beeldende kunst aan de universiteit van Syracuse. Begin jaren 50 vertrok hij naar New York.
