He depicts Sarah as if she is on stage, costumed in male attire. The symbolic features around the bust add a heightened sense of the drama – a trait that never left her.
Sarah Bernhardt, the greatest actress of her generation, "the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture," died of uremia on March 26, 1923, at the age of 78. She had lived a truly captivating and scandalous life, but she still had one last performance to make.
Through his relations, Sarah Bernhardt became an actress at the age of 17. Sarah was slim, with delicate features, a pale skin, almond shaped eyes and curly red hair. In those days being slim was not a beauty feature and nobody would have imagined that one day Sarah Bernhardt would become an international superstar like Madonna or Lady Gaga today .
In one notable example, she played Hamlet in 1899, at age 55, in a French adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. What’s more, she boldly undertook the role in London, then again in Stratford at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. Finally, she became the first woman to portray Hamlet on film (see a short clip above).
