Anderson’s 20,000 Leagues under the Sea is ultimately a modest, flawed addition to the Verne film oeuvre; without the love triangle, it would have been vastly more satisfactory. Its more contemplative approach to the story and the open-endedness of Nemo’s fate are more compatible with the novel, but they simultaneously serve to highlight the vicissitudes of the intrusive love story.
