Er zijn sinds de Porgy and Bess in première is gegaan in 1935 vier orkestsuites geschreven die gebaseerd zijn op thema’s, aria’s en intermezzo’s uit de opera. De eerste suite is geschreven door Gershwin zelf tussen 1935 en 1936. De oorspronkelijke titel was Suite from Porgy and Bess, maar Ira Gershwin veranderde deze in Catfish Row in 1958.
Porgy & Bess was an idea of the Swiss jazz all-rounder Mathias Rüegg, who launched a project – unique to Vienna at the time – in the former "Fledermaus-Bar" in 1993: To bring internationally renowned jazz bands to Vienna.
