In my mind, Big Daddy has always ranked between 3.5 and 4 stars. It begins as if it's going to be just as strong as the two albums that preceded it. "Big Daddy of Them All", "Jackie Brown", "Martha Say" and "Theo and Weird Henry" are all mature character sketches that show how far Mellencamp's song writing had come since his early albums.
