Anne Isabella, Lady Ritchie ( née Thackeray; 9 June 1837 – 26 February 1919), eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray, was an English writer, whose several novels were appreciated in their time and made her a central figure on the late Victorian literary scene.

Anne Thackeray Ritchie died on 20 February 1919, having spent the final years of her life dedicated to preserving the legacy of her father. William Makepeace Thackeray is now predominantly remembered as the author of the popular Vanity Fair, but Annie’s own reputation was not to endure.
Anne Thackeray Ritchie’s papers, represented in this exhibition, show her central place to the late-Victorian literary scene, while her descendants’ role in preserving these papers, which are now entrusted to Eton College, ensures that the writer and her world will never be completely forgotten.
Highly significant are the lines of descent from Anny Thackeray Ritchie. I consider Woolf’s inheritance from Ritchie in part, given our location, by exploring their shared connections with Yorkshire. I suggest that Woolf’s response to Ritchie, and to her past in general, is characterised by ambivalence and paradox.
