Wilkinson and Lange are wonderful in this story of acceptance and understanding. Throughout the film they both beautifully express the pain both characters are experiencing. Wilkinson with the turmoil of feeling he was born in the wrong body, the need for him to change it and the fear by doing it risking losing Irma and his family in the process.
Normal explores Roy's gender dysphoria with empathy, but also has an eye for the social and familial absurdities that come up. The humor, far from trivializing the issue, steers it away from cloying sentiment or politically correct sanctimony.
Donna Lee Shelby, a mentally challenged girl who lives in Forest Haven, an institution for the developmentally disabled, meets Ricardo Thornton, a fellow resident. When Forest Haven is closed by a court order, Donna and Ricardo venture into the real world on their own.
