When the Karen Silkwood story was first being talked about as a movie project, I pictured it as an angry political expose, maybe "The China Syndrome, Part 2." There'd be the noble, young nuclear worker, the evil conglomerate, and, looming above, the death's-head of a mushroom cloud. That could have been a good movie, but predictable. Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) is a twenty-something hard-living metallurgy worker at the Kerr-McGee plant in Oklahoma, who lives together with her boyfriend (Kurt Russell) and best friend (Cher). When Karen and several other workers become contaminated by radiation, plant officials try to minimize the incident.
Silkwood is situated on the Bruce Highway roughly halfway between Tully and Innisfail. [4] The locality is flat land about 10 metres above sea level and is predominantly freehold land used for farming, particularly the cultivation of sugarcane. The north-western border of the locality is Liverpool Creek, which flows eastward to the Coral Sea.
