I Fairport Convention si sono costituiti nel 1967 attorno ad Ashley Hutchings (basso), leader del gruppo nella prima fase, con il chitarrista Richard Thompson e gli altri chitarristi Simon Nicol e Ian Matthews, Judy Dyble era la voce solista e Martin Lamble alla batteria. Nel secondo disco l'ingresso di Sandy Denny al posto della Dyble.
Fairport Convention es un grupo de folk rock británico, pionero en el uso de instrumentos eléctricos. La banda se formó en abril de 1967 y pasó rápidamente de hacer versiones de grupos estadounidenses de la Costa Oeste a un estilo peculiar que combinaba el rock con melodías y canciones tradicionales inglesas .
Fairport Convention were soon playing regularly at underground venues such as UFO and The Electric Garden, which later became the Middle Earth club. After only a few months, they caught the attention of manager Joe Boyd who secured them a contract with Polydor Records. Boyd suggested they augment the line-up with another male vocalist.

Fairport Convention is een Britse folkrockband, opgericht rond 1967. Hun eerste optreden was in een kerk in mei 1967. De band geldt als pionier van de Engelse variant van de folkrock , een stijl die tot dan toe geheel geënt was op de Amerikaanse folk van artiesten als Bob Dylan .

In January of that year they released their second album What We Did On Our Holidays, the first one to feature singer Sandy Denny. In May they hit rock bottom with a tragedy that killed two people including one of its members.
