Il poeta, che scritto Ulysses nel 1833, riprende sia l’Ulisse di Omero che quello dantesco sulla profezia dell’ultimo viaggio dell’eroe che, assetato di conoscenza, trova la morte spingendosi troppo lontano.
Alfred Tennyson (Somersby, Lincolnshire 1809 - Haslemere, Surrey, 1892) è stato il più importante poeta dell'epoca vittoriana, nominato Poeta Laureato nel 1850 e barone nel 1884. Tra le sue opere più celebri, oltre a In Memoriam (1850), i poemi Idylls of the King ( Gli idilli del Re , 1885), ispirati al ciclo arturiano, e molte raccolte di liriche.

Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson with his wife Emily and his sons Hallam and Lionel. In the second half of his life Tennyson’s fortune and popularity flourished as over the next forty years he produced many of his most popular works, such as Enoch Arden and The Charge of the Light Brigade and was awarded a barony in 1883, taking a seat in the House of Lords the year after.
