2 apr 2024 · Philip, landgrave of Hesse (1509–67), one of the great figures of German Protestantism. His agile mind, infectious energy, and fearlessness made him the leader of the Protestant estates in the power struggle with Roman Catholic Emperor Charles V. His warmhearted, generous nature earned him the byname ‘the Magnanimous.’

Frederick William George Adolphus, Landgrave of Hesse ( German: Friedrich Wilhelm Georg Adolf von Hessen-Kassel; 26 November 1820 – 14 October 1884) was the only son of Wilhelm I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel-Rumpenheim and Princess Louise Charlotte of Denmark.
Philip I of Hesse was born as the eldest son of William II, Landgrave of Hesse and William the Second's wife, Anna of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The early years of Philip I were marked by a considerable unrest. The father of Philip I, William II, had died when Philip I was only four years old.
In 1500 reunited Hesse after the death of his cousin William II. 1500–1509: Landgraviate of Hesse: Regencies of the Estates of Hesse (1509-1514) and Anna of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1514-1518) After his death Hesse was divided between his legitimate sons. He also later succeeded Frederick as Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. Mary died in 1772, and Frederick lost little time in marrying again. On 10 January 1773, at Berlin, he married Margravine Philippine , daughter of Frederick William, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt and Sophia Dorothea of Prussia .
