Jules Dassin war ein US-amerikanischer Filmregisseur, Drehbuchautor, Produzent und Schauspieler. Nach ersten Erfolgen in Hollywood zog er zu Beginn der McCarthy-Ära nach Europa, wo er seine Karriere fortsetzte.
Jules Dassin was born Julius Moses Dassin, in Middletown Connecticut on December 18, 1911. Member of a large family of seven children (he had four brothers and two sisters) he was the son of Jewish immigrants. His father Samuel was from Odessa and his mother Berthe Vogel was Polish Jewish. His grandfather worked as a wig maker for the Odessa Opera.
