Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink (1 December 1864 – 21 April 1934) was a Norwegian polar explorer and a pioneer of Antarctic travel. He inspired Sir Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, and others associated with the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
Borchgrevink’s expedition established themselves as world authorities on Antarctic research and survival. Their hut design was well considered, having insulation and a double glazed window. The expedition was successful in locating the position of the South Magnetic Pole.

Carsten Borchgrevink, leader of the British Antarctic Expedition 1898–1900, was a man who embodied all three characteristics. Although not nearly as well known as Scott or Shackleton, Borchgrevink remains a key figure in Antarctic history.
The public was interested to learn that there were no large land animals in Antarctica—expeditions would not now need guns against Polar bears! Borchgrevink was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was knighted by the king of Norway, but did not receive the recognition he considered his due.
27 giu 2020 · Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink was born on December 1, 1864 in Christiania, today’s Oslo. At the end of the 19th century, he devoted himself intensively to Antarctic research and in 1895 he was one of the first people to enter the Antarctic mainland.
