Peter Phillips. Peter Phillips was jazz and classical piano player, bass trombonist and composer. Born in Pittsfield, Mass., on April 29, 1941, died on Feb. 13, 2014. Phillips studied piano and bass trombone at the Eastman School of Music. Throughout career conducted Broadway musicals, was a studio musician, and classical and jazz pianist.
He puts this down to Phillips being an ‘unsympathetic’ artist, whose paintings while undeniably intelligent are ‘peculiarly repellent—harsh, ungenerous, lacking visual oxygen’. In 1959 that he visited Paris and began to exhibit at the RBA Galleries in London. Phillips did a graduate course at the Royal College of Art in London from 1959 to 1962.
