Philipp I der Großmütige (Philip the Magnanimous): Landgrave of Hesse (Landgraf von Hessen), 1509-1567; born 13 November 1504. He was the son of Landgrave Wilhelm II of Hesse (1469-1509), who died when Philipp was only five years old. Until 1518 Philipp was under the regency of his mother Anna of Mecklenburg (1485-1525).
Philip I of Hesse was the Landgrave (Landgraf) of the German province of Hesse. He is best known for being one of the first Reformers of the Protestant Reformism in Germany. Also, Philip I is well-known for being one of the early Protestant rulers of Germany. He had championed the independence of the prince of Germany against Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor.
His father, Wilhelm II, died as a result of syphilis when his eldest son was only four. This plunged Hesse into political controversy over its regency, with nobles taking the temporary reigns and ultimately separating Philipp from his mother, Anna of Mecklenburg. The two were reunited in 1514, and Philipp officially became Landgrave in 1518.
