Deborah Read Franklin (c. 1708 – December 19, 1774) was the common-law wife of Benjamin Franklin, polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
In October 1765, Deborah Franklin sent a gushing letter to her husband, who was in London on business for the Pennsylvania legislature.

Deborah Read and Benjamin Franklin entered a common law agreement on September 1, 1730. A bachelor in his twenties was frowned upon and Franklin at age 24 was set to find a wife. Deborah Read, who he had courted before going to England, had married Roger Potter during his absence.
When Franklin spent the years of 1757 to 1762 and 1764 to 1775 in Europe as a representative of the government of Pennsylvania, Deborah Franklin stayed in Philadelphia. She had no wish to cross the ocean.
