Barber-Scotia College was founded in Concord in 1867 as Scotia Seminary, a Presbyterian preparatory school for young, newly freed African American women. For more than a generation the institute prepared these women to become teachers, social workers, and members of other professions.
30 set 2010 · Barber-Scotia College is a coed liberal arts school founded by the Presbyterian Church in July 1867 by Reverend Luke Dorland as Scotia Seminary. Reverend Dorland was commissioned by the Presbyterian Church to create an institution to train black women in programs of elementary, secondary and normal school work in the South.

24 feb 2024 · Rey was hired in July 2023 as the 20th leader of Barber-Scotia College. The institution lost accreditation back in 2004. At its height, Barber Scotia had more than 1,100 students, but now enrollment is down to 10 who all take classes online. “I cannot allow for a Historically Black College to close on my generation’s watch,” Rey said.
