Filmed on location in 1984, the realistic surroundings add immensely to the depressing aura of that entire period, and Wallenberg's personal courage, charm, and sheer "balls" in taking on Adolph Eichmann and the Nazis in Budapest is very well represented by Richard Chamberlain's terrific performance, giving the audience a true sense of what Raoul Wallenberg was really all about.
Wallenberg: A Hero’s Story is a powerful portrait by Chamberlain of the idealistic Swedish diplomat who outsmarted Eichmann (chillingly played by Colley) and saved over 100,000 Hungarians during WWII. He was captured by the Russians after the war to disappear forever. It was worth all my time to revisit this.
Wallenberg intervenes and convinces the SS general in charge to countermand the order. Russian troops enter the city. Wallenberg has designed a relief plan for Budapest and prepares now to take it to the Russian command. On the way to Debrecen, his car is stopped. On January 17, 1945, Raoul Wallenberg is taken into Russian custody.
