28 set 2021 · When al-Khoei passed away on Aug. 8, 1992, Sistani was the grand marj’a’s closest disciple. The only major scholar alive in Najaf at that time was Sayyid Abd al-A’la al-Sabziwari (1910-93), who passed away a year after al-Khoei. From 1993, Sistani took on the role of grand marj’a of Najaf.
When Ayatollah Khoei died in 1992, Abd al-A'la al-Sabziwari briefly became the leading marja'. However, when he died in 1993, al-Sistani ascended to the rank of Grand Ayatollah through formal peer recognition of his scholarship.
The Marjaya will not be dominated by high ranking clerics. The current situation in Najaf is similar to the situation before the death of Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei in 1992 when Abd al-A’la al-Sabziwari succeeded him in 1993. He was elected by a broad spectrum of Shiites in Iraq and Iran. However, he died months after the death of al-Khoei.
His students included: Mohammad Ali Araki (his son-in-law), Mohammad Ali Ordubadi, Nasrollah Eshkavari, Abdul Hosein Amini, anvari Hamadani, Mohammad Taqhi Bahjat, Yousef Biyari, Sadr Al din JAzaeri, Muhammad Rida al-Muzaffar, Hadi Milani, Hossein hamadani Najafi, Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei, Mohammad Hossein Tabatabaei, Mortaza Modrresi Chahardehi, sayyed hadi Khosrow Shahi, Abd al-A'la al-Sabziwari.
