Fils de Guy XVI de Laval et d'Anne de Montmorency sœur du connétable Anne. Il eut pour parrains Claude de Rieux et François de Laval, ses beaux-frères. Son baptême eut lieu le jour même du mariage de sa sœur, Anne, avec François de la Trémoille, le 24 février 1522.
