Gli Unsane hanno quindi cominciato a far parte, attorno al 1990, della scena "di rumori" di New York, suonando con gente come Pussy Galore, Helmet, Cop Shoot Cop e altri. Nell'autunno del 1991, esce l'album di debutto Unsane per la Matador Records, album considerato un caposaldo della nuova scena noise rock, nonché uno dei lavori "estremi" più influenti degli anni '90.

Unsane è nato sul finire del 2016, quando, alle prese con la post produzione di Logan Lucky, ho deciso che volevo tornare a fare film di genere ma a modo mio. Con Unsane ho potuto esplorare un genere su cui non avevo mai lavorato prima e con una tecnologia che non avevo mai usato prima se non nel tempo libero: la fotocamere di un iPhone.
