Today, the woman formerly best known as “Ellen’s mother” has made a name for herself: Betty DeGeneres, LGBT-rights activist.
Betty DeGeneres was born into an ordinary family and had a normal upbringing. She studied speech therapy before getting married. DeGeneres has two children, Ellen and Vance. Ellen changed her outlook toward life and brought her to the forefront of social rights activism. Ellen, who is homosexual, disclosed her sexual orientation to her mother.
After Ellen came out, Betty became the official spokeswoman for the Human Rights Campaign (the first non-gay person to assume this position). Today she continues traveling the country far and wide in that role, talking to gay men and lesbians and their families and friends about the fear, rejection, abandonment, love, and acceptance they've experienced.
