This emphasis on design contributed to the shift in title of the institution away from its initial attachment to ‘arts and crafts’ to a designation as Central School of Art and Design in 1966. The school's principal William Johnston had initiated a number of changes in the post‐war years with shifts in the design curriculum, including textiles, theatre, and ceramics.
