St. John’s is a coeducational, liberal arts college with no religious affiliation. The college was founded in 1696 as King William’s School and chartered in 1784 as St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. A second campus opened in 1964 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The college’s first graduate program was founded in 1967 in Santa Fe.
On September 12, St. John’s announced a new philanthropy-centered financial model and tuition for undergraduate students was reduced from more than $52,000 to $35,000 beginning with the 2019–20 academic year. St. John’s launched a $300-million capital campaign, Freeing Minds, and was described as “The Most Contrarian College in America” by the New York Times columnist Frank Bruni.

St John's College, formally the College of St John the Evangelist in the University of Cambridge, [4] is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, founded by the Tudor matriarch Lady Margaret Beaufort. In constitutional terms, the college is a charitable corporation established by a charter dated 9 April 1511.
