Sandy Dennis war Tochter des Postangestellten Jack Dennis und dessen Ehefrau Yvonne, einer Sekretärin. Sie wuchs mit einem acht Jahre älteren Bruder in Kenesaw und später gemeinsam mit den Großeltern in Hastings auf, ehe die Familie im Jahr 1946 nach Lincoln übersiedelte.
