The young driver Jody Scheckter was called by Enzo Ferrari to be part of the Scuderia in 1979. Jody, a South African with Lithuanian origins, was already racing at a young age in the minor formulas. He started with karts passing on to tourism class, Formula Ford and Formula 3.
Jody Scheckter joined Ferrari for a successful 1979 season and was known affectionately as Baby Bear. Prodigiously talented but considered by some rivals as reckless, Scheckter adopted a new approach to racing after the US Grand Prix, the last round of the 1973 season. During practice, French star François Cevert crashed fatally.
Scheckter comes from a racing family, his uncle, Tom, having entered the pre-war 1937 South African Grand Prix and his father having owned garages in his home town of East London. Scheckter got his start in karts around the age of eight after his parents challenged him to better his failing grades.
