On the afternoon of August 2nd, 1876, a poker game took place in Nuttal and Mann’s Saloon located in the town of Deadwood, Southern Dakota Territory. Charles Rich and William Massie sat down to the only game going when a man who needed no introduction entered the barroom.
But death found Hickok on August 2, 1876, when he was shot in the back of the head in Deadwood, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota) by John "Jack" McCall. Wild Bill Hickok brought law and order to notoriously lawless communities. Unassuming, never boastful, he was frequently challenged by gunfighters who felt they could take him.
Jack McCall is a recurring character as well as an antagonist during the first season of HBO's Deadwood. He served as the season's primary antagonist. He is portrayed by Garret Dillahunt.
