16 apr 2019 · Vipers have a triangular-shaped head. This shape accommodates the venom glands at the back of the jaw. Most vipers are slender to stout-bodied snakes with a short tail. Most species have eyes with elliptical pupils that can open wide or close down very narrowly. This enables the snakes to see in a wide range of light conditions.
Indeed, vipers can sit and wait for a long time and use their tail movements to attract and bring prey close enough to catch (practice called caudal luring). Unlike the other snakes many vipers are viviparous, which means that females give birth to live young. Vipers females also take care of their young which is not very common among snakes.
Researchers recognize hundreds of different species of Vipers, and place them in three different subfamilies. They group the species into “true,” pit, and Fea’s Vipers. Some of the more well-known members of this family include the rattlesnakes, puff adders, Gaboon Vipers, moccasins, bushmasters, copperheads, and more.
