The film is set during the American Civil War at an isolated army base at the far reaches of the American frontier, where the Indians still far outnumber the whites.

A trapper and his two partners work as scouts for a remote army fort where they witness an incompetent colonel's decision to throw his small unprepared garrison against Red Cloud's sizable Sioux force.
At the cave, Johnny slips up from behind and is about to shoot Rocky, when he realizes that Cherokee was the man who wounded Sam. When Cherokee tries to draw a hidden gun, Johnny fires at him first. Aware that Oakes is missing from the group, Rocky rides swiftly back to town. He gets to the jailhouse in time to save Sam, but then must fight Oakes.
