No movie is made for everybody. "julien donkey-boy" is hardly made for anybody. It seems at first to be merely a jumble of discordant images ("Freaks" shot by the "Blair Witch" crew) but then, if you stay with it, the pattern emerges from the jumble. You understand, first of all, that the point of view is that of a schizophrenic person.
Julien is different, schizophrenic. He wears gold teeth. He bowls, sings, worships, and chats with a group of young adults with disabilities. His sister's child is probably his own. He talks on the phone, imagining it's his mother, who died in childbirth years before. He may be a murderer of children.

It is a series of impressions involving the titular Julien (Ewen Bremner), a young man suffering from a schizo-affective disorder as he interacts with his dysfunctional family and the wider community around him.

Julien lives at home with his pregnant sister Pearl (Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Chloë Sevigny - "Boys Don't Cry," "Zodiac"), his brother Chris, who wrestles in his spare time; and their violent father, who slaps his children around, hoses them down with water, and offers to pay Chris ten dollars to dress up in his late mother's clothes and dance.
