Charles Tennant. by Colin Campbell. Charles was born on 3 May 1768 at Alloway in Ayrshire to John Tennant and Margaret McClure one of thirteen children. He was educated at Ochiltree Parish School. His father initially apprenticed him to be a handloom weaver. In 1795 he married Margaret Wilson in Paisley. They would have ten children.
Tennant was the chief promotor of one of the first public railways in Scotland, the Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway (opened 1831), which allowed him to cut the costs of delivering coal to his works. His process remained the principal one in use to make bleach until the 1860s, when techniques were developed to make chlorine as a biproduct in the Leblanc process.
In 1797, Charles Tennant & Company Ltd. was established and by 1835 in the United Kingdom, Tennant’s St. Rollox Works “were the most important chemical works in the world. covering over 1,000 acres”. TC comprises over twenty companies, and 1200+ employees, operating in: Chemical Manufacturing - Distribution - Specialty Chemicals and Services.
