5 lug 2022 · The Bridges of Madison County in Iowa were made famous by the 1995 movie starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood plays a National Geographic photographer who is visiting the area to photograph the covered bridges. Long story short, he gets lost so Meryl helps him find his way and an elicit affair ensues.
While the covered bridges may be the main stars, there’s more to Madison County. Located less than 30 minutes west of Des Moines, Madison County has long been home to the famed covered bridges. But the area’s popularity exploded when the novel Bridges of Madison County was published by an Iowa author.
Enjoy Middle River Views At Holliwell Covered Bridge. Holliwell Covered Bridge, Stop 9, is two miles southeast of Winterset. Holliwell is Madison County’s longest covered bridge at 159 feet long. Built in 1880, it’s still in its original location. In the movie, the lovers meet here after Kincaid visits Winterset.

Location. 123 Holliwell Bridge Rd. Winterset, IA 50273. Madison County, Iowa. Tourism. Holliwell Bridge is located two miles southeast of Winterset over Middle River. Built by Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster in 1880 for a cost of $1,180, it is the longest of the six remaining covered bridges in Madison County, spanning 110 feet.
