Johann Georg was born in Halle on 25 June 1677 to Johann Adolf I, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels and his first wife, Johanna Magdalena of Saxe-Altenburg. [1] He succeeded his father upon Johann Adolf's death on 24 May 1697. Because he was still a minor, the Elector Frederick August I of Saxony briefly assumed a regency.
