Jagged Little Pill is the third studio album by Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette, released on June 13, 1995, through Maverick and her first album to be released worldwide.
Alanis Nadine Morissette ( / əˈlænɪs ˌmɒrɪˈsɛt / ə-LAN-iss MORR-iss-ET; born June 1, 1974) is a Canadian and American [1] singer, songwriter and musician known for her emotive mezzo-soprano voice and confessional songwriting. She began her music career in Canada in the early 1990s with two dance-pop albums.
At age 14 Morissette signed a song-publishing deal that led to two dance-pop albums, Alanis (1991), which sold at least 100,000 copies and earned her Canada’s Juno Award for most promising female vocalist of the year, and Now Is the Time (1992), which sold more than 50,000 copies.
Her early music career, marked by two pop-oriented albums released exclusively in Canada, left her creatively unfulfilled and yearning for a new direction. By 1995, the tides were turning for the 19-year-old Morissette. Frustrated with her manufactured pop image, she sought to reinvent herself.
Before “Jagged Little Pill,” Morissette had already released two dance-pop albums in Canada, but it was her partnership with producer Glen Ballard that ignited the transformation of her sound.
Alanis, her debut album, is squarely within the pop of the early 90s. It channels Martika, Madonna and Paula Abdul, with light hip-hop influences dotted across its ten tracks. Denigrating the album for what it was never meant to be is a pointless exercise.
Alanis Morissette embarked on one of the most spectacular career reinventions in music history when she turned from the fluffy dance-pop of her first two (Canadian-only) albums to the ragingly cathartic JAGGED LITTLE PILL, which was released on this day in 1995.
