He was made chancellor of the kingdom in 1503, and held the abbacy of Dunfermline in commendam , (fn. 7) and also the abbacy of Arbroath.

He escaped by getting his guards drunk, and then lowering himself from a window on a rope. The duke fled to France, then England, where he allied himself with King Edward IV.
