This is the penultimate chapter of The Lord of the Rings in which the Hobbits come back to the Shire to find it under the thumb of Saruman and Wormtongue. It’s an Orwellian nightmare of jobsworths, ruffians and snitchers.

This is called the scouring of the Shire, and there is a last battle required to overthrow Saruman for good. No one gets through the conflict unscathed. It is a loss of innocence.

30 apr 2024 · The movies omit the Scouring of the Shire (whereby the Shire itself is radically transformed into a heavily industrial area), but it more or less ruins the Shire for Frodo. It's no longer the peaceful countryside it was at the start of LOTR.
Hobbits are susceptible to disease. In The Scouring of the Shire, it is mentioned that in the summer of 1420, no one in the Shire was ill. Which is an awfully strange statement to make if no one in the Shire is ever ill.
