Beeching’s brief on his appointment was simple – cut the losses that British Railways was suffering.
14 mag 2024 · MARCH 27, 1963, is a date that few people who worked on British Railways at the time will forget. This was the date that BR published its infamous Reshaping of British Railways report, commissioned by chairman Dr Richard Beeching.
In the 50s, Dr Beeching was put in charge of downsizing the railways to make them more profitable. Despite being deeply unpopular, it somewhat made sense as there were loads of duplicate lines, such as the small town of Wath having three separate lines and stations. But many lines were perhaps unnecessarily torn down.
