Preliminary excavations in 1965 (fn. 9) revealed an earth rampart inside the line of the town wall, and a ditch in places 25 feet wide and 9 feet deep cut into the sandstone. The wall was built on the top of the rock face.

The line of small dwellings at each side of the road to Stratford terminated at the site of St. Lawrence's chapel until the 20th century, and many of the houses still remain to make this the most picturesque approach to the town along tree-lined pavements.
